Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Aspen, Colorado

Explore Alpine Lakes with Mountain Views in Every Direction

Stand up paddle boarding in the Roaring Fork Valley offers something rare: glassy water surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks. Rich Valley Adventures guides SUP experiences on some of the most scenic alpine lakes in Colorado, from the vast calm of Ruedi Reservoir above Basalt to the intimate wilderness setting of Grizzly Lake near Independence Pass.

Our paddle boarding trips are guided, unhurried, and designed for all experience levels. Beginners learn balance, paddling technique, and water safety in calm protected bays before venturing onto open water. Experienced paddlers explore more of the lake, take on light downwind runs, and push their endurance on longer crossings.

All equipment is provided — premium inflatable and hard SUP boards, adjustable paddles, Coast Guard-approved PFDs, and dry bags for your gear. We handle the logistics so you can focus entirely on the incredible scenery surrounding you.

Morning & Afternoon Sessions

We schedule sessions for optimal calm-water conditions — typically morning for Ruedi and late afternoon for sheltered coves.

Ruedi Reservoir — Aspen's Premier SUP Destination

Ruedi Reservoir sits at 7,700 feet elevation in the Frying Pan Valley, 15 miles east of Basalt. The 1,000-acre lake is fed by snowmelt from the surrounding White River National Forest and stays calm and glassy on most summer mornings — perfect conditions for paddle boarding.

Morning paddles at Ruedi offer mirror reflections of the surrounding peaks and wildlife sightings that are rare anywhere else: osprey hunting the surface, great blue herons wading the shallows, deer drinking at the shoreline. On calm days, you can see 30 feet to the rocky bottom through the crystal-clear water.

SUP Lessons for Beginners — Get on the Water Fast

Never paddled before? No problem. Our beginner SUP sessions start on the beach with a 20-minute land-based orientation covering board anatomy, proper paddle grip and stroke mechanics, stance, and how to fall safely and get back on. By the time you step on the water, you'll have the fundamentals to paddle confidently.

Most complete beginners are paddling independently within 30 minutes. Our instructors stay close throughout the lesson to provide real-time feedback and encouragement. Kids as young as 6 can participate on youth-specific boards with additional flotation support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience to try paddle boarding?

No experience needed at all. Our guided sessions start with a complete beginner orientation. Most people are paddling on their own within the first 30 minutes.

Is paddle boarding safe for kids?

Yes — paddle boarding is one of the safest water sports. All participants wear Coast Guard-approved life vests. Children as young as 6 can participate, and younger kids can share a board with a parent.

How cold is the water?

Mountain lake water in Colorado ranges from 55–70°F depending on time of year and elevation. We recommend wearing athletic clothes or a swimsuit you don't mind getting wet. Wetsuits are available upon request for early-season outings.

What if it's windy?

Wind is the main variable for SUP. We monitor forecasts closely and may adjust meeting locations to more sheltered coves if wind develops. Safety is always the priority — we'll reschedule if conditions aren't right.
